Music was brought to America by the Pilgrims and other early colonists. Throughout the history of this nation, the music has reflected the character of the people as well as picturing and commemorating historic events.

This session will quickly survey the history of music in America, from the psalm-singing of the colonists through the end of the nineteenth century. The effects of European music will be identified as well as the development of music which is identified as truly American. Highlights will include biographical information of key American composers and hymn writers. Performance of selected works will introduce compositions by Francis Hopkinson, Alexander Reinagle, and other American musicians.
