Noah Webster defines a classic as: "An author of the first rank; a writer whose style is pure, correct, and refined...2) A book written by an author of the first class."  Orthodox critical opinion holds that there is no American author of first rank in the colonial period. In the face of this opinion, it behooves the student of American Christian History to read the original documents for himself. He will find there many examples of a style which is "pure, correct and refined." William Bradford is foremost among these. This workshop will be a consideration of passages from Bradford's Of Plimoth Plantation, identifying his classic presentation of setting, character, plot, theme and style. The method of analysis practiced here should be useful in evaluating other authors as well.
