With so much at stake in the upcoming election, you may be wondering what one individual can do to make a difference.
We must, of course, prayerfully consider how we will vote for candidates in every office, local, county, state, and nation.
As I have watched many speeches and listened to the news pundits reiterate and reinterpret what has been said, my heart and mind reflects upon historic moments in our nation. In 1932, America was facing great challenges and the question American voters had to face was how do we want to fix our problems. Herbert Hoover in one of his addresses made this statement:
“This campaign is more than a contest between two men. It is more than a contest between two parties. It is a contest between two philosophies of government.
“We are told by the opposition that we must have a change, that we must have a new deal. It is not the change that comes from normal development of national life to which I object or you object, but the proposal to alter the whole foundations of our national life which have been builded through generations of testing and struggle, and of the principles upon which we have made this Nation. . .”
The American people made a choice in 1932 to go down a path which would lead us to more and more reliance upon civil government and less reliance upon God and individual self government and responsibility.
I believe we are again faced with a contest that is not just between two men or two parties, but we are facing a contest between two philosophies of government. What choice will we make?
Noah Webster wrote: “In selecting men for office, let principle be your guide. Regard not the particular sect or denomination of the candidate – look to his character as a man of known principle, of tried integrity, and undoubted ability for the office.”
The Scripture gives many principles for the character of a ruler, including II Samuel 23:3 — “He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of the God.”
With America’s failure to teach our Christian history, in ignorance many will choose only based upon the external qualities of the man or woman running for office. But what are principles by which that individual is guided? And what should be the principles by which he is guided?
- Is civil government created by God or man?
- What is the purpose for civil government?
- What does our Constitution define as the purpose for civil government?
- Which candidate will best protect life and liberty?
- Which candidate values individual self government?
- Which candidate respects the ownership of individual private property?
- Which candidate will protect liberty of conscience?
Do we know the principles upon which this nation was founded? Are we being guided by those principles?
Do you desire to answer these questions for yourself? Do you know the relationship of the principles of the Word of God and our nation?
Restoring America’s Biblical Foundations is a timely and valued resource for Christians from all walks of life to reason Biblically concerning the nation. Please prayerfully consider
Our prayer is that the Lord will guide the hearts of the individual as each choice is made for those who will serve in public office.
