<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\nI’ve kept a cookbook that was handed down in our family. It’s title speaks volumes, Portraits of Patriotism and Praise, Precious Promises, and Palatable Recipes<\/strong><\/em>. Printed in 1976, it features favorite recipes from the mothers of Kindergarten children in our Christian school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I don’t honestly use any of the recipes from the book any more, but I still keep it because biographical sketches of strong, godly women are printed throughout the book, as well as poetry selections which I treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here is one of my favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Reading Mother<\/em><\/strong> I had a Mother who read to me I had a Mother who read me lays I had a Mother who read me tales I had a Mother who read me the things You may have tangible wealth untold; What is something in your family that you keep and treasure? Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth,
“Blackbirds” stowed in the hold beneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe,
Which every boy has a right to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales,
True to his trust till his tragic death,
Faithfulness blent with his final breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings–
Stories that stir with an upward touch,
Oh, that each mother of boys were such!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be–
